Erin Ran the Boston Marathon!!

April 26th, 2007

Congratulations Erin!! After slugging through the mud for 8 months trying to fight off her I.T. Band problem and picking up a case of plantar fascitis in the process, she wondered if she’d be running at all when Boston came around. In just over 4 months, not only was she able to run the Boston marathon, but she did so pain free!!

This is especially great since I can still remember one of Erin’s emails in which she said, “I really want to be one of the success stories”. Well, with a little help from 3DMT and some (a lot?) of consistent, appropriate training she did just that.

Great job!

The 3DMT Training Program

May 12th, 2006

The training aspect of the 3DMT approach is different from most other forms of training popular today.  The biggest differences are in the implementation of the exercises and the scheme by which exercise sessions are conducted.

In most training and rehabilitation facilities medical and training professionals typically match various exercises to patients and athletes based upon a stated goal.  As some of you know this doesn’t always work.  The 3DMT approach goes one level higher considering the functional ability of the client or athlete when prescribing exercise programs.  Because we do this, our outcome success rate is very high.

3DMT also takes a different approach in it’s exercise sessions.  It is very difficult to know exactly how long or how many days, weeks, months will be necessary so instead of offering one on one training or appointments, we offer training on a monthly basis without limitations.

Ever have trouble getting an appointment with a therapist or trainer?  Ever run out of time right in the middle of your program?  We accommodate you whenever you want to come for as long as your program takes.

What’s Better, This or That?

May 9th, 2006

You often hear or ask the question what’s better, this or that?  It’s been asked in many forms, are free weights better than machines?  Is Yoga better than personal training?  Is Chiropractic better than massage?

In my 15 years of experience I have found the truth to be no one single technique is the cure all, end all.  That’s why aerobics, strength training, Yoga, massage, Chiropractic didn’t work for everybody.

This fact contributes to another uniqueness of the 3DMT training program.  Based on your evaluation, we use exercises, stretches, and techniques from all of these different training methods in specific ways and in specific orders to address the functional ability that your body has.  It’s not uncommon for us to prescribe a combination of stretching and Yoga positions in conjunction with free weights and machines.  The result is the most individualized training possible.

Science: Throw-like & Push-like Patterns

May 8th, 2006

The occurrence of Throw-like and Push-like movement patterns are very common in sport activities and therefore understanding their application can be very beneficial.

Throw-like patterns are those where the goal of the activity is to obtain the highest possible velocity (speed) at the furthest point like your hand, foot, or with an implement like a racquet, club, or bat.  Throw-like patterns are performed best when the various segments of the body act in a sequential manner.  This requires a certain amount of coordination and allows each succeeding segment to acquire the speed or energy from the proceeding segment.  For example, during an overhand throw, if the shoulders rotate before the arm swing forward, the speed or energy of the shoulders can be transferred to the arm allowing it to move faster than it could by itself.

When the objective is maximum force at the furthest point, like the hand, simultaneous rotations are more effective.  For sport activities like a shot put or the clean pull of an Olympic lift, simultaneous joint actions can produce greater force.

Benefits of Neuromuscular Training

May 4th, 2006

There are several benefits to the 3DMT training program. It concentrates on the neuromuscular system and as a result the exercise intensity is, generally, much lower than typical resistance training. We say generally, because we have had people dripping with sweat without lifting so much as a single weight. This is not typical, but has occurred. One way that this benefits the exerciser is that they never really have to wait for an exercise machine or piece of equipment to become available if someone else is using it. Most of the resistance used is your own body weight, and in some case that’s more than enough.

Another benefit of neuromuscular training is that because the resistance used is less, the potential risk of injury is greatly reduced. The risk of injury during training increases as the resistance used increases.

A final benefit is that performance can also improve significantly without high intensity training techniques. A retired NBA player increased his vertical jump by 13″ and an injured swimmer set personal best times at league and regional meets.

The 3D Motion Training Approach Explained

May 3rd, 2006

3D ModelMost of you are probably wondering, just what is this 3D and motion training thing? The short answer is 3DMT is an approach to health and performance. It includes two parts, evaluation and training.

First, the 3D in 3DMT represents the 3-dimensional nature of our evaluations. We use a high tech 3D motion analysis system to evaluate how your body moves. We use the Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS) which until now has been limited to specific applications in academic research and University Hospitals focusing on extreme musculo-skeletal conditions. APAS type 3D analysis systems are the best way to capture and analyze human movement, and what we call functional ability. 3DMT allows you access to this same cutting edge technology at very affordable prices.

The second component of the 3DMT approach is training. Once we evaluate the way you move and identify strength, flexibility, or coordination deficits it is then necessary to train your body to move more efficiently. This is done by re-educating the neuromuscular system to operate more efficiently. There is no pill or quick fix, your neuromuscular system learns by doing and therefore requires your active participation in a consistent manner.

3D Motion Training has been very successful and includes indirect benefits like the confidence, understanding and ability to put you back in control of your own health or performance. Since you do all the work you get all the credit and satisfaction for your improvement!
